Nondual Meditation: Recognizing Nonduality

Nondual meditation invites you to explore the nature of awareness itself—open, self-knowing, and undivided.

When the ordinary sense of separation begins to soften, the division between self and world becomes transparent, revealing experience as a seamless whole. More subtly, the apparent separation between awareness and experience itself dissolves. The field of awareness and what appears within it are inseparable, like the ocean and its waves.

Nondual presence is already here, as the very field of knowing and being in which all experience unfolds. Through nondual practice, we learn to recognize this ever-present wakefulness and live from its clarity and compassion in the midst of daily life.

Nonduality is part of my broader approach to meditation. Continue below to explore nondual meditation in more depth.

The Path of Nondual Presence

The orientation of this work is nondual presence, the direct recognition of awareness as the self-knowing, undivided field in which all experience arises—where knowing and being, awareness and experience, self and world, are inseparable.

We begin by cultivating the foundations of calm-staying (shamatha), mindfulness, and insight (vipashyana) —preparing the ground so that the recognition of nondual presence can unfold naturally.

As the mind learns to rest in stillness and grasping relaxes, glimpses of nondual awareness emerge through practice: boundaries soften, and the separation between subject and object collapses. With refinement, this deepens into a subtler realization—the inseparability of awareness and experience.

From this deepening, nondual presence begins to know itself directly, beyond the filtering of attention or conceptual thought. Experience becomes self-illuminating, effortless, and intimate—what some traditions call a taste of awakening.

As nondual presence recognizes itself, practice shifts toward stabilization—allowing this self-knowing presence to remain unobscured in every situation.

Finally, realization ripens into embodiment. Nondual presence moves as compassion in relationship, as discernment in action, as creativity and ethical responsiveness in the world. Practice and daily life are no longer separate; the stillness that knows and the movement that expresses it are revealed as one continuous unfolding.

The essence is simple: to rest as the awareness that knows, to recognize that awareness and its appearances are not two, and to let that realization illuminate every facet of life.

How it works

I offer nondual meditation as part of comprehensive meditation guidance. Depending on your background and readiness, we might begin directly with nondual recognition, or we might first establish the foundation that makes this recognition more accessible.

This work is always responsive to where you are and what's ready to emerge. We might:

  • Establish the foundations needed to recognize subtle aspects of awareness

  • Explore glimpse practices that reveal nondual awareness directly

  • Work with specific inquiry techniques or direct pointing instructions

  • Practice recognizing nondual presence in formal meditation

  • Explore what appears to block deeper realization

  • Integrate what you're discovering and address questions as they arise

  • Support the stabilization of nondual presence so it becomes more continuous

  • Bridge insights from the cushion into daily life

The guidance honors your lived experience, allowing recognition to unfold organically.

Questions and answers

  • My approach to nondual meditation draws on both formal training and lived practice across classical and contemporary lineages.

As an Aletheia Coaching practitioner, my work is grounded in Aletheia’s nondual meditation system and coaching methodology, which integrates developmental depth with realization of nondual presence.

As an Effortless Mindfulness facilitator-in-training, I incorporate glimpse practices drawn from this contemporary approach to nondual meditation and awakening, emphasizing natural recognition and integration into daily life.

As a Unified Mindfulness (UM) teacher, I draw from advanced aspects of this system related to nondual meditation, even though the framework itself does not explicitly use nondual terminology.

My approach is further informed by contemporary teachers and traditions including:

    • Planetary Dharma – Teachings on Essence practice and the unfolding of awakening in a planetary context.

    • Michael Taft – Pragmatic nondual meditation and contemporary articulation of Mahamudra-inspired practice.

    • Peter Fenner – The Radiant Mind and Natural Awakening approaches to nondual inquiry and realization.

    • Mahamudra – Classical and modern teachings describing awareness as empty, radiant, and inseparable from experience.

    • Dzogchen –Study and practice of Dudjom Lingpa’s Vajra Essence and Buddhahood Without Meditation, whose view of awareness as self-knowing and spontaneously present resonates with the orientation of Nondual Presence.

    • Diamond Approach – A contemporary Western path integrating psychological inquiry with direct realization of essential presence. Many aspects of Aletheia’s framework draw inspiration from this approach, and my own ongoing study continues to shape how I support clients in embodying realization.
